FG Approves Major Reforms for NYSC After 53 Years

The Federal Government has approved a comprehensive reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), marking the biggest overhaul of the scheme since it was established in 1973.

Some of the key reforms approved include:

1. Orientation Camp to Last 6 Weeks

   The current 3-week orientation exercise may be extended to 6 weeks, with greater focus on leadership, entrepreneurship, digital skills and career development.

2. Technology-Driven Call-Up Process

   The call-up system will become more technology-driven to improve efficiency and reduce challenges associated with deployment.

3. Risk-Sensitive Deployment

   Corps members will be deployed with security considerations in mind to enhance their safety across the country.

4. Skills-Based Primary Assignments

   Corps members may now be posted based on their academic background, skills and career aspirations to ensure more productive service.

5. Improved Camp Standards

   A national grading and certification system will be introduced to improve the standard of orientation camps nationwide.

6. New NYSC Uniform

   The Federal Government has approved a redesign of the NYSC uniform to reflect professionalism and national pride.

7. Graduation Ceremony to Replace POP

   The traditional Passing Out Parade (POP) will be replaced with a graduation ceremony.

8. Civilian-Led Administration

   The NYSC will now operate under civilian leadership, while the military will continue to provide security support.

According to the government, these reforms are aimed at transforming NYSC into a more skills-driven, productivity-focused and youth-empowering institution.
