The internet is roasting! Singer-songwriter Simi's resurfaced tweets from over a decade ago have set the Nigerian blogosphere on fire, and now the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has stepped into the chaos with an official investigation announcement.
Here's the tea: Screenshots of old posts from Simi's X (formerly Twitter) account dating back to 2012-2013 resurfaced this week.
In them, the "Duduke" hitmaker made comments about her time helping at her mother's daycare that some netizens interpreted as inappropriate references to toddlers.
One post mentioned a four-year-old child having a "crush" on her, while another joked about a child trying to touch her inappropriately.
What's wild? The posts themselves are over a decade old, but timing is everything on social media.
The uproar intensified after Simi publicly spoke out against rape culture following the Mirabel controversy, which had netizens digging through her account like detectives.
Simi's Response
The singer hit back with a statement saying she was only 23 years old at the time, working at her mom's daycare while pursuing her music career.
She maintained that the posts were innocent reflections of everyday life and that her words have been twisted and misinterpreted.
"I've never been depraved," she emphasized, also noting that her management has been removing some older posts to protect her family.
NAPTIP Moves In
NAPTIP released an official statement saying it's committed to investigating all "credible reports" of child sexual abuse or misconduct in daycare settings across Nigeria.
The agency is asking anyone with evidence to reach out confidentially via email or direct message.
This move has sparked debate, though. Some Nigerians are questioning why NAPTIP's approach differs from how it handled similar allegations involving other celebrities, with accusations of bias already flying around online.
One thing's certain: the internet isn't letting this die anytime soon.
