There Is No Going Back On Commencement Of New Tax Laws In January 2026–Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made it clear: Nigeria’s significant tax reform laws will take effect on January 1, 2026.

He describes this as a rare chance to create a fairer and more competitive tax system.

In his statement, he emphasized that the new tax laws, including those already in place since June 26, 2025, will proceed as planned.

These reforms aim not to increase taxes but to reset the system.

They are designed to harmonize processes and uphold dignity while reinforcing the social contract.

Tinubu called on all parties involved to back the implementation phase, which is now underway.

He acknowledged public concerns regarding potential changes to the new tax laws but insisted that no major issues have been found that would justify halting the reform process. Trust takes time and is built through sound decisions, not hasty reactions.

He reaffirmed the administration's dedication to due process and the integrity of the laws in place. The Presidency will collaborate with the National Assembly to quickly address any issues that arise.

Tinubu assured Nigerians that the Federal Government will act in the public's best interest, ensuring a tax system that fosters prosperity and shared responsibility.
